Budgens Backs The British Farmer With New Fresh Meat Sourcing Policy
All Budgens own label fresh meat and poultry is now 100% produced by English farmers.
Setting a precedent amongst smaller retailers, the move responds to increased customer demand for food sourced from English farmers.
To support the move and communicate the message to consumers, Budgens is launching a “Budgens Backs English Farmers” campaign on Thursday 3 July, running throughout all Budgens and Budgens Local stores.

Look out for the Red Tractor Logo as your guarantee that British meat is farm assured. The Red Tractor Logo is a independently recognised 'Farm Assurance' scheme, which ensures that high standards of animal welfare is maintained. |
Stephanie Rice, Budgens Marketing Director, comments:
We are delighted to be able to source all our fresh meat from within the UK and we strive to use British producers wherever possible in all categories. All our meat is farm assured, and customer demand for British products, coupled with our versatility as a smaller store group, have enabled us to make this fundamental change in our fresh meat policy. We are proud to support the British farmer and British quality as a whole, and we hope that other retailers will follow our lead.”
NFU President Sir Ben Gill said: “We are extremely pleased that Budgens has decided to show their support for British agriculture and move all their fresh meat purchasing to UK produced meat. The move will allow shoppers access to the very finest, home grown produce.
The fact that all the products are produced in accordance with the British Farm Standard is even better news for shoppers as it means they are buying food they can trust. Products carrying the Little Red Tractor logo are produced to independently inspected standards, with care for animals and the environment.”
Together we have developed the requirements that cover all aspects of production and are designed to ensure the consistency, quality and safety of Budgens farm assured British meat. Because all Budgens British meat is farm assured, this means that we can fully trace our meat back to the farms of origin and that the animals have been raised to a high level of welfare.

After the Ladies in Pigs roadshow visited our Midhurst store, Francis Slade of Ladies in Pigs had the following to say:
"What a super store! We wish that all supermarkets were like it. Steve Mew the store manager and all his staff made us feel welcome and were most helpful and friendly. Following some of our experiences at supermarkets it was wonderful to not only be expected but also to have the store manager himself help us to find a suitable parking space for our mobile kitchen. We were most impressed with the store - everything semed to run like clockwork. Budgens at Midhurst has certainly set a high standard for the rest of our roadshow!"
"The quality of the pork chipolatas and both the pork tenderloin and diced pork was excellent making our task of cooking delicious recipes that much easier. It was lovely for us to be promoting British quality pork knowing that customers could only buy British pork in the store. We cannot wait to get to the next store!"
