Budgens Discovers A Taste of Sussex

This month sees the launch of a partnership between Budgens and local food marketing organisation, A Taste of Sussex, to introduce a range of around 100 locally-sourced products in a number of Budgens stores in Sussex .

A Taste of Sussex, a division of Sussex Enterprise, supports and promotes food and drink production in East and West Sussex and the range Budgens is listing includes confectionery, dairy, meat and bakery products, alcoholic and soft drinks, conserves and relishes.  Food from Britain and  SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) have both helped fund the development of the partnership.

Formally launched at Budgens’ Midhurst store on 10 March, the range will initially be available in eight stores.   Point of sale material with the Taste of Sussex logo – the Adonis blue butterfly, found locally on the Sussex Downs - will highlight the products instore

Says Budgens Marketing Director, Stephanie Rice, “This is the latest stage in our roll out of locally sourced food.  People increasingly want to support their local community and to ‘buy local’ and this is something we want to encourage as it makes sound commercial sense, too.  There are some excellent Sussex suppliers and we’re pleased that we can offer them a route to a wider market through our Budgens stores.”

Hilary Knight, co-ordinator for A Taste of Sussex, said, “Budgens has recognised the wealth of quality and experience associated with local food and drink producers and aims to harness this for the good of the industry.  Partnerships such as this provide a lifeline for many small business, helping them to find new markets and to increase their profitability, as well as helping to give consumers the high quality product that they are asking for.”

Woody’s Tops the Pickle Pops

In a taste test in Saturdays Times Magazine, the locally made Woody’s Sussex Special Pickle was chosen ahead of all its rivals by a panel of independent experts.

The judges awarded the Sussex Special Pickle a perfect score of 4 stars leaving competitors from Marks & Spencers (3 stars) and Tescos (2 stars) trailing in its wake.  Popular competitors such as Branston and Heinz were awarded  only one star each and the product from ASDA failed to trouble the scorer.

One panellist said of Woody’s Pickle  “the balance of sweetness and sourness is perfect” and it was also described in one word as “lovely”.

Peter Wood the director of Woody’s Homemade Foods said “this results confirms what our customers have been telling us over the last 4 years that  natural, additive free products made by small food producers look and taste much better than any mass produced alternative.”

Woody’s is based in Shoreham-by-Sea and the production unit is in Partridge Green in West Sussex .

Woody’s products are available at Farm Shops & Delis throughout Sussex , larger branches of Budgens and some Farmer’s Markets.
